Carhart, David

David Carhart

David John Carhart was born 1937. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London under Lennox Berkeley since 1954. David Carhart received a first success as a composer with his piano sonata performed at the Cheltenham Music Festival in 1959. In 1964 he reached a stylistic impasse and did not compose for 5 years, but resumed composing in 1969. In addition David Carhart worked as the head of music at a West London college for several years. In 1989 he founded the ensemble "Double Image" for which he was both director and pianist. The agenda of the group was to perform neglected British music and always include female composers in their programmes.

The work list of David Carhart include a piano concerto, "On the Willow Boughs" for tenor and orchestra, a string quartet, a violin sonata, a piano sonata, other chamber music, piano works and songs.

In my possession is the autograph manuscript of the work "Sequence for piano" by David Carhart. The manuscript is not dated, therefore it is uncertain when the work was composed. As far as I know it remains unpublished.
