Ernst Vogel

Ernst Vogel was born on 1 March 1926 in Stockerau (Austria). He was the grandson of Ernst Vogel (1871-1948), a manufacturer of water pumps. Therefore the composer Ernst Vogel is often referred to as "the younger".


Ernst Vogel mainly worked as a businessman for the water pump company of his family, but he was also passionate for motor sports and music. In 1948 Ernst Vogel participated in a motorbike race for the first time. In 1954 he suffered a serious leg injury and had to switch to car racing. He finished his active motor sports career in 1959, but was still involved as an official in the Austrian motor sports activities and was co-founder of the Austrian motoring association.


In terms of music Ernst Vogel studied privately composition, church music and piano under Josef Lechthaler and Felix Petyrek since 1945, and also attended a master class with Paul Hindemith. He mainly composed music for orchestra and chamber ensembles. His output includes concertos for violin (three in total: 1957, 1968, 1983), cello, double bass, piano, organ and saxophone, 2 symphonies, orchestral works, two string quartets, a piano trio and songs. Ernst Vogel was also president of the "Wiener Singakademie", vice-president of the Lower Austrian Tonkünstler Orchestra and member of the board of the Austrian Composers' Association ÖKB and the Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft.
Ernst Vogel died on 29 November 1990 in Vöcklabruck (Austria).

A) scores:

 

  • String quartet No.2 (1961)
    The autograph whiteprint translucent papers with two different endings.
    The work was first self-published by the composer in 1961 and privately distributed (under the code VE 57), later the publishing house Hans Pero took over the distribution of the score. In this first version the string quartet ends in the last movement with measure 386.
    Around 1970 the publishing house Doblinger seized the rights for publication and in this second version the last movement of the string quartet ends with measure 333.
    Beside the original whiteprints with both endings I also own several copies of the first self-published score.
  • Metamorphosen / Spiegelungen for orchestra (1965)
    The work "Metamorphosen, for orchestra" was at first only an orchestral composition. But it was used again in a ballet choreographed by Ilse Lore Wöbke in Heidelberg and performed in February 1967. For the ballet the composition was retitled by Ernst Vogel into „Spiegelungen“.
    In my possession are a) a copy of the whiteprints of „Metamorphosen“, b) a printed score of Metamorphosen used by Ernst Vogel as a proofcopy and to include some additions and revisions for the ballet (like the change of the title to "Spiegelungen") and c) a printed score of "Spiegelungen" which was used by the conductor Hans Blümer at the premiere of the ballet. It includes further additions and corrections by Ernst Vogel.
