Weise, Paul

Paul Weise

Paul Weise was born on 15 January 1869 in Hohendorf, a small town near Calbe (Germany). There is only little biographical information about him, but he was a music teacher by profession and organist at the Apostel-Paulus-Kirche in Berlin-Schöneberg around 1915. He also composed songs and larger choral works of which some were published by Vieweg around 1920. Paul Weise died after 1936.

In my posession are several autograph manuscripts of songs by Paul Weise. Some songs are on words by Wilhelm Spreen (1880-1933), a Berlin-located teacher and writer and the manuscripts came from the estate of Wilhelm Spreen. The archive includes manuscripts of the following compositions:

  • Karfunkel von Karfunkelstein, for voice and piano (text by Wilhelm Spreen)
  • Als einst ein Abt, for voice and piano (text by Wilhelm Spreen)
  • Karl der Große, for voice and piano
  • Papenkühl am Kaisermoor, for voice and piano
  • Kling, klang, Gloria, for voice and piano
  • Im Kloster die Brüder, for voice and piano
  • Junge Liebe, for voice and piano (text by Wilhelm Spreen)
  • and two untitled songs for voice and piano

In addition I also own the published song "Es liegt ein Land.., for choir" op.26 by Paul Weise. The work was published by Vieweg as part number 460 of their collection "Jugend-Gesang".

For information purposes here one of the songs above:

As mentioned above the manuscripts of Paul Weise came very likely from the estate of Wilhelm Spreen, because the original ensemble of documents (when I bought them) included also works by Konrad Scherber - again on words by Wilhelm Spreen. This collection finally contained also some copies and prints of works by other composers which I would like to mention for completeness. I think some items are rare and hard to find nowadays:

  • Der Elfentanz, for voice and piano - composer unknown, private copy of handwritten score
  • Musik-Beilage zu "Die Revision" von Wilhelm Spreen, komponiert von H. Lucke - copy of handwritten score
  • untitled composition for piano - autograph score but not signed, therefore composer unknown
