Ottmar-Wolfram Vogel was born on 3 August 1945 in Leipzig (Germany). He was born into a muscial family. His grandfather was a student of Franz Liszt, his mother a music dramaturge. So Ottmar-Wolfram Vogel received a musical education himself from an early age. After school he studied bassoon and music education at the Rostock branch of the Hanns Eisler Conservatory and finished in 1969. He first worked as a „sport pianist“ at the sports club „SC Empor Rostock“ where he composed music for the free program of gymnasts and accompanied them on the piano. Since 1971 Ottmar-Wolfram was prinicpal bassoonist in the orchestra of the theatre in Greifswald. He stayed in this position until his retirement. Ottmar-Wolfram Vogel died in March or April 2022 in Greifswald.
As a composer Ottmar-Wolfram Vogel was self-educated. During his lifetime he composed around 100 compositions. As a bassoonist himself his output has an emphasis on chamber music with bassoon. But he also composed several large orchestral works as well as incidental music to several plays that were performed at his theatre in Greifswald.
Ottmar-Wolfram Vogel Archive
In my possession is the main musical estate of the composer Ottmar-Wolfram Vogel. That means the manuscripts of most of his works are located in this archive. Due to the fact that none of his compositions was ever commercially published I am presenting here not only a finding aid to the archive but also a selections of his works for information purposes.
Scores
1) Freiberger Notizen
The "Freiberger Notizen" (Notes from Freiberg) for bassoon and piano were composed in 1974. The work has the subtitle "Konglomerat". I have no information about a performance of the piece.
2) Experiment
The Experiment for 6 instruments is scored for flute, trumpet, bassoon, 2 violins and cello. It was composed in 1966 while Ottmar-Wolfram Vogel was still studying music. I have no information if the piece was ever performed.
3) Szenario piccolo II
The work "Szenario piccolo II" was composed in 1990 for the installation of the new mayor of Greifswald (which was Reinhard Glöckner). The composition is scored for 5 instruments (violin, trumpet, oboe, bassoon and cello), but the performers have to play also percussion instruments as well as to declaim a poem by Adelbert von Chamisso.
The world premiere took place on 13 May 1990 in Osnabrück. The concert was part of a tour of the musicians Andreas Otto (violin), Marco Heinermann (cello), Helmut Sauer (oboe), Ottmar-Wolfram Vogel (bassoon) and Klaus Listemann (trumpet) - all members of the "Vorpommerscher Kammermusikreis". Therefore the world premiere was performed before the intended use at the installation of the new Greifswald mayor.
4) Sinfonia concertante
The Sinfonia concertante was composed in 1990 and is scored for solo violin, solo oboe, solo bassoon and orchestra. It was premiered on 17 December 1990 by Andreas Otto (violin), Helmut Sauer (oboe), Ottmar-Wolfram Vogel (bassoon), the Vorpommersches Sinfonieorchester Greifswald under Ekkehard Klemm (conductor).
