John Luke Rose was born on 19 July 1933 in Northwood Hills (Great Britain). After finishing at Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School, John Luke Rose was educated at the University of London and the Trinity College of Music. He received his PhD in music in 1963 on a work about the musical language of Richard Wagner.
After his studies John Luke Rose worked as a lecturer at the Trinity College of Music, the University of Oxford and of London, but mainly focussed on composing. Still in his study years he received the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize in the consecutive years 1957 and 1958. His orchestral works were championed by conductor Bryden Thomson and performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
John Luke Rose should not be mixed up with British composer John Rose (born 1928 in London).
John Luke Rose composed at least an opera "Odysseus", 2 symphonies, concertos for piano and for violin, chamber music like a string quartet, 2 piano sonatas or a violin sonata.
In my possession are the autograph manuscript of the Violin sonata op.28 and the "Three meditations and rondo, for solo violin".
Three meditations and rondo, for solo violin
The "Three meditations and rondo, for solo violin" is subtitled "Music for wide-open spaces" and is followed by an instruction from the composer: "These pieces may be played while watching the sunrise on Mt. Kanchyinyunga in the Himalayas; in a boat on Milford Sound or Lake Lucerne; in the prairies near the Rockies, or anywhere what just happens to be handy."
Violin sonata No.1 op.28
The Violin sonata No.1 op.28 was composed between October 1972 and March 1973. The work is dedicated to Yfrah Neaman and David Wilde.
