Huertas, Jose

Jose Huertas

Jose Huertas was born around 1890 in Oran (Algeria). His father was the vice-consul of Spain in Mostaganem. Jose Huertas studied music at the Madrid conservatory and received a first prize in piano.
In the 1920s and early 1930s Jose Huertas became quite successful with his compositions in France and some of his works were published by French publishing houses like Senart. But he returned to Oran and became the director of the local Schola Cantorum and honorary president of "La Mouloudia", the first oriental music society in Oran
Jose Huertas died in 1958.

There is little information about the work catalogue of Jose Huertas. Therefore I compiled a list of his compositions from newspaper announcements:

  • Petit nocturne, for piano op.1
  • Rapsodie arabe op.15 (1923)
  • Messeder Remel Maia, for flute and orchestra op.18 (1924)
  • Mouley djerouene, for voice and piano op.20 (1926)
  • L'Ame des cloches, for voice, violin, cello and piano
  • Beltyis, operetta
  • Kiss-me, foxtrot for orchestra
  • Melopee arabe, for violin, cello, oboe and piano
  • La mort de mon premier maitre
  • Hymne a Jeanne d'Arc
  • Quand on conspire
  • Les mirages du desert
  • Capriccio espanol, for piano
  • Valse romance, for piano
  • Jeanne parle, for voice and piano
  • O ma charmante, for voice and piano
  • Romance sans paroles
  • Nuit de noce arabe
  • Impressions d'Oranie, for piano (1956)

In my possession is the autograph full score of the "Rhapsodie arabe" for orchestra op.15. The work is dedicated to the composer Etienne Rey-Andreu. A piano reduction of the work was published by Ch. Hayet in 1923 and I own a copy of this publication as well.
