Gerhard Fürchtegott Wehle was born on 11 October 1884 in Paramaribo (Suriname) to German parents. His father was a missionary in Suriname, but the family returned to Bautzen in Germany while Gerhard Wehle was still a schoolboy. After school he first attended a teacher's course in Niesky and then studied music in Leipzig under Thomas Geller and Isadore Amter (1905-1907) and since 1907 in Berlin under Karl Kämpf.
After his studies Gerhard Wehle earned a living as a music critic, writer and private music teacher. He was especially engaged in improvisation and wrote several books about it (Die Kunst der Improvisation, 1926 and Die Orgel-Improvisation, 1932). From 1939 to 1944 Gerhard Wehle was teacher for improvisation at the Hochschule für Musik and from 1947 to 1951 music editor at the Berlin University.
Gerhard Wehle died on 15 October 1973 in Berlin (Germany).
The work catalogue of Gerhard Wehle has a strong emphasis on vocal music, especially for choir. He composed dozens of works for men's or mixed choir with or without accompaniment as well as many songs. Furthermore his catalogue contains a symphony op.19, a piano trio op.26 and a Romantic Suite for piano op.32.
In my possession is the autograph manuscript of the work "Dennoch" for 4-part men's choir and piano op.34 No.3 by Gerhard Wehle. The work sets the poem by Carl Spitteler with the same title to music. My manuscript is not dated, but in reference to the other works from his catalogue the composition was very likely composed around 1925. The work is part of a set of 4 works for men's choir, but I have no information about the titles and whereabouts of the other songs.
