Harold Craxton was born on 30 April 1885 in London (Great Britain). He studied piano under Tobias Matthay and Cuthbert Whitemore at the Matthay School. After his studied Harold Craxton worked as a piano accompanist for soloists like Emma Albani (soprano), Clara Butt (alto), Nellie Melba (soprano), Lionel Tertis (viola) and Jacques Thibaud (violin). In 1919 Harold Craxton was appointed piano professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London where he taught until his retirement in 1961.
Beside these activities Harold Craxton also composed his own works. His compositions include mainly piano works and songs. And he had a special interest in early music and transcribed and arranged many of these works for piano.
Harold Craxton died on 30 March 1971 in London (Great Britain).

In my possession are a few autograph manuscripts of Harold Craxton. These autographs include:

  • fair copy of the work "Slavonic dance for piano", dedicated to Eveline Rix (pianist, born ca. 1945, correctly spelled "Evelyn". She later married and was known under the name Evelyn McGilloway)
  • working manuscript of the piece "A quiet tune, for piano"
  • working manuscript of an untitled piano composition, 32 measures and marked "Andante con moto"
  • fair copy of two menuets by Jean-Baptiste Lully, arranged for piano
