Kokoschka, Julius

Julius Kokoschka

Julius Kokoschka was born on 23 February 1850 in Prague (at that time Bohemia, today: Czech Republic). He studied cello and piano (under Julius Theodor Höger) at the Prague conservatory. After his studies Julius Kokoschka first worked as a cellist in the newly founded National Opera in Prague under Bedrich Smetana (and with colleague Antonin Dvorak in the viola section). From 1870 to 1872 Julius Kokoschka was music teacher for the Prince of Thurn and Taxis. In 1872 he moved to Vienna and became teacher at one of the piano schools of Eduard Horak. In 1878 Julius Kokoschka founded his own piano school - the "Wiener Clavierschule" in the districe Mariahilf. In 1881 a second branch opened in the district Landstraße. Since 1900 Julius Kokoschka was also professor for piano at the Theresian Academy. In 1926 Julius Kokoschka's piano school is still listed in newspapers (then located in district No.5). Curiously there is no information when Julius Kokoschka passed away.

The work catalogue of Julius Kokoschka contains an opera, orchestral works, chamber music with an emphasis on piano works, choral works and a piano school "Theoretisch praktische Klavierschule für den ersten Anfang und die ersten Jahre".

In my possession is the autograph manuscript of the song "Frühlingslied" op.14 for voice and piano by Julius Kokoschka. The work sets a poem by Marie Bertgen to music and is also dedicated to her.
