Barnabas Dukay was born on 25 July 1950 in Szöny (Hungary). He completed his high school years at the Sebestyen Lantos Secondary School of Music in Györ under Ilona Unger (piano) and Istvan Fekete Györ (composition). Between 1969 and 1974 he was a student at the Liszt Ferenc College of Music under Rezső Sugár, and graduated in 1976. He was member of the New Music Studio from 1970 to 1990 working as composer and performer. He taught solfege and music theory at the Béla Bartók Conservatory from 1974 to 1991, then became a professor at the Department of Musical Theory of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music. Barnabas Dukay received the Ferenc Erkel Award in 2000 and the Bartok-Pasztory Award in 2007.
In my possession are the autograph manuscripts of the full score and the parts of the composition "Breathing exercise" for 4 horns by Barnabas Dukay. The manuscript is undated and I found no information when it was composed. The full score has the following comment by Barnabas Dukay on the title page: "Ez a darab "O" című komporicióm "A" változatának, 4 kürtre (in F) átírt, könnyitett formája" (This is the simplified form of the "A" version of my composition "O", transcribed for 4 horns (in F))
