Gehlhar, Gerhard

Gerhard Gehlhar

Gerhard Gehlhar was born around 1890 in Ostroda (at that time Germany, now Poland). His father was a teacher of profession and organist himself and so noticed the musical talent of his son at an early age. Gerhard Gehlhar then received piano and organ lessons by his father. He went on to become a musician and studied at the Royal Academy of Musical Performing Art in Berlin.
There is no information about the activities of Gerhard Gehlhar after the completion of his studies till the end of World War II.
After World War II Gerhard Gehlhar and his family had to leave East Prussia and he settled in Bremerhaven. Gerhard Gehlhar earned a living as music teacher at different schools in the area. After his retirement he was organist at a local church.
In 1979 both his wife and daughter had passed away and Gerhard Gehlhar finally moved to Marxzell. There he died after 1980.

In my possession are several autograph manuscripts of works by Gerhard Gehlhar. My archive contains the following compositions:

  • Der Leiermann, for voice and piano (text by Heribert Menzel) (1941)
  • Lied in der Dämmerung, for voice and piano (text by Carl Lange) (1940)
  • Es rauschen die alten Tannen, for voice and piano (text by Carl Lange) (1940)
